Zebrafish Husbandry Workshop at Aquaculture 2016
Meet the Keynote Speaker: Stephen C. Ekker, Ph.D.
Keynote Topic: Cure Mapping Using Zebrafish

Stephen C. Ekker received two bachelor of science degrees (Genetics and Developmental Biology, Electrical Engineering) from the University of Illinois where he studied genome engineering and molecular evolution with Dr. Carl Woese. Dr. Ekker obtained his PhD from the Johns Hopkins University on the biochemistry of Hox gene action, characterizing the DNA recognition code for homeodomains and how they recognize regulatory elements. Post-doctoral work studied the biochemistry and function of hedgehog proteins working with HHMI labs at Johns Hopkins (Dr. Phil Beachy) and the University of Washington (Dr. Randy Moon). On the faculty of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Ekker was the founding Director of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Transposon Research (now called the Center for Genome Engineering).

Stephen Ekker, Keynote SpeakerStephen C. Ekker, Ph.D.

Dr. Ekker is Editor-in-Chief of the Zebrafish journal with the regular Fish Haus section that focuses on the science of fish husbandry, and he is organizing the 2016 Special Issue on Zebrafish Health. The Ekker laboratory has pioneered the use of transposons, morpholino antisense oligonucleotides and targeted genome editing methods in zebrafish. The Ekker lab is focusing on modeling health using cure mapping and deploying this accessible model system for healthier communities as a part of new science education program, InSciEd Out.
