AquaGenZ™ Multi-Rack Central Filtration System

The Ultimate Edge in Aquatic Research. Built for You.

For Freshwater & Saltwater Species Alike

Every breakthrough starts with a strong foundation. At Aquaneering, we've spent decades perfecting systems that empower researchers to achieve the extraordinary. Our AquaGenZ™ Multi-Rack Central Filtration Systems—connecting anywhere from 3 to over 200 single- and/or double-sided AquaGenZ racks—aren't just equipment; they are the key to unlocking the full potential of your aquatic research facility.

Designed for institutional core facilities, major research centers, and large-scale industrial programs, this shared life-support architecture delivers the ultimate in efficiency, consistency, and scalability across both freshwater and saltwater environments.

One Platform. Infinite Research Possibilities.

The AquaGenZ™ system is uniquely engineered to support a broad and diverse range of aquatic model organisms. Its centralized dosing and monitoring plant maintains precise water chemistry parameters—salinity, pH, conductivity, temperature, and more—making it equally capable of sustaining freshwater or marine species on the racks.

The Science of Superior Water Quality

The filtration architecture of the AquaGenZ™ Multi-Rack Central Filtration System is built on the same fundamental scientific principles as our stand-alone rack systems—scaled to serve an entire facility. The water treatment sequence is methodical, multi-stage, and designed to eliminate every category of aquatic contaminant before water is returned to the animals.

The AquaGenZ™ Central Filtration Flow

Under-Rack FBB Central Sump Gravity Drum Filter FSI Filters Return to Racks

Water returning from the tanks first collects in the under-rack sump, where the recirculation cycle begins. Under each rack, the water is pumped into the Fluidized Bed Bio-Filter (FBB)—the biological core of the system. The FBB provides up to 10 times the colonizable surface area of conventional bio-filters, sustaining a dense population of nitrifying bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate with exceptional efficiency, achieving undetectable ammonia levels across every rack in the facility. The water from all connected under-rack sumps then collects in the central high-capacity sump, sized precisely to your facility's total system volume.

Following collection in the high-capacity sump, water flows by gravity through an industrial-grade drum filter—the primary mechanical filtration stage at the central plant scale. The drum filter continuously and automatically removes particulate matter and biological media from the water column, operating with minimal operator intervention and engineered for the throughput demands of a multi-rack facility.

Water is then pumped through FSI (Fine Sediment Interception) filters—providing the same zero-media-in-tanks assurance as the sediment filter used in stand-alone systems—which removes fine suspended particles that passed through earlier stages. The result is water of exceptional optical clarity and biological purity, delivered uniformly to every rack connected to the central plant.

This four-component sequence—Fluidized Bed Bio-Filter → Central Sump → Gravity Drum Filter → FSI Filters—is the same fundamental scientific process that underpins Aquaneering's stand-alone rack systems. Whether a researcher is operating a single AquaGenZ™ stand-alone rack or a 200-rack institutional facility, the biological and mechanical filtration principles are identical. The only difference is scale.

Redefining Modularity & Efficiency

Uniform Water Quality Across All Racks — Every rack connected to the central plant receives identically treated water, eliminating rack-to-rack variability and dramatically improving the reproducibility of your research data.

Precision Water Chemistry for Every Species — The central plant features fully integrated automated dosing and monitoring—including salt and sodium bicarbonate dosing—to maintain the precise salinity, pH, conductivity, and temperature profiles required by your facility's specific species.

Zero Media in Tanks—Guaranteed — The multi-stage filtration sequence—drum filter followed by FSI filters—guarantees that no media ever reaches your tanks, regardless of species or water type.

Facility-Wide Control and Monitoring — The AquaTouch monitoring system, built on a Beckhoff PLC, tracks critical parameters like pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen facility-wide. Receive instant alerts via email or text, and view real-time system status from anywhere in the world via web server.

Uncompromised Biological Filtration & Oxygenation — Our maintenance-free fluidized bed bio-filter (FBB) is scaled to your total system volume. A dedicated degassing column strips CO2 and infuses oxygen, ensuring your aquatic environment is always balanced and ideal.

Built for Today's Labs. Ready for Tomorrow.

Aquaneering is trusted by leading universities, global research institutions, and innovators in aquatic research for one simple reason: we deliver results. Our systems aren't just built to last—they're custom-engineered to empower you, so you can focus on what truly matters: your discoveries.

Every central filtration system is custom-designed by Aquaneering's engineering team. From consultation through installation and commissioning, our team delivers a turnkey solution that grows with your facility.

Your Racks, Ready When You Are. While each central filtration plant is custom-engineered to your facility's specifications, the AquaGenZ™ racks that connect to it are not. Aquaneering mass-produces AquaGenZ™ shelves for inventory, meaning individual rack units can be assembled and shipped in as little as one week. This allows institutions to commission their central plant on a planned timeline while receiving rack units rapidly as their animal populations grow—without waiting months for each new rack to be manufactured. Your facility's expansion is limited only by your science, not your supply chain.

Contact Aquaneering today to begin the design process for your central filtration system.
